I ett anfall av överdåd köper Hjalmar en cykel på postorder, för pengar han i hemlighet lånat av klockmakarn. Cykeln, denna armade cykel, blir både hans lycka och hans förbannelse. Lycka, därför att de långa cykelturer han unnar sig bjuder på så mycket frihet som det är möjligt för honom att få. Förbannelse, därför att denna oerhörda självförhävelse straffar sig när klockmakarns arvingar börjar kräva pengarna åter. En gripande berättelse från en inte alltför avlägsen västerbottnisk verklighet.
